Andy Bourne

Andy Bourne sport climbing in Red Rock, Nevada.

Basics

I began working for the AAI in February of 2000, where I worked in the office for a few seasons, and used my personal time to explore the Cascades, Sierras and the mountains of Western Canada. I began guiding in 2003 and have done trips in Red Rock Canyon, the Cascades, Sierras, and in Southwest China.

Personal Geography

I grew up in Tennessee and graduated from Tennessee Tech University in 1997 with a degree in Marketing. After school, I focused my time and energy on traveling and climbing, and through some convoluted happenstances, I ended up in Bellingham. I have now spent ten years living in the Bellingham area.

Proudest Climbing Achievement

The achievements I'm most proud are a split-decision between two or three experiences I've been privileged to have. I'm proud of climbing the east ridge of Inspiration Peak, located in the Picket Range of the North Cascades National Park, in 2001. I also climbed the Beckey-Chouinard route on South Howser Tower in Bugaboo Provincial Park in 2009, and the Grand Wall of Chief in Squamish

Proudest Personal Achievement

A personal achievement I'm proud of is when I did not summit a single peak despite lots of tries. In 2004, I took my first trip to Sichuan Province in Southwestern China to explore unclimbed peaks in remote areas. I returned in 2005 and 2006 to lead expeditions for the AAI, which was the highlight of my guiding career. I learned much about Tibetan and Chinese culture and formed friendships with climbing partners that will last a lifetime.

Guiding Geography

I guide across the Cascade Range in Washington and have guided routes in the Eastern Sierra range of California. As for rock destinations, I work in Squamish, BC; Leavenworth, WA; Red Rock Canyon, NV, and Tonsai Beach in Thailand (as soon as the AAI begins offering trips.)

Climbing Philosophy

I think that I climb because it combines mental and physical challenges with solitude and incredible scenery. I get to see places that most people will never see, and I enjoy exploring new places to see what's around the corner.

Favorite Climbing Destination

I can't say I have a favorite climbing destination, mainly because there are too many excellent places to list. My favorite climbing environments are clean alpine granite (Sierra, areas of the Cascades, Bugaboos, Wind River Range) and tropical limestone (Thailand, China, Cuba, etc.)

Favorite Style of Climbing

My favorite style of climbing is alpine ridge climbing because you get the feeling of being on the summit all day.

Hobbies and Interests

I enjoy learning about solar and renewable energy, culture and travel, and discussing news and current events. I like to spent time riding my bike around town, and going out for breakfast.

Inspirations

The late Charlie Fowler inspired me with his spirit of exploration. He traveled alone to some of the most remote places on earth and climbed impressive first ascents completely solo.
