Personal Geography

I was born in Scotland. I am not sure I have ever grown up, so that is a trick question. I spent some wasted years in Detroit, MI. I have also lived in Norwich and Cambridge in England, and New Jersey. I went to School in Eugene, OR.

Proudest Climbing Achievement

I am most proud of the fact that every time I go to the mountains I have a great time, no matter what I do, or where I do it. I have been guiding since 2007.

Proudest Personal Acheivement

I'm proud of leaving the corporate world in order to do what I truly love for a living.

Guiding Geography

I guide in the Cascades, Alaska, and Red Rocks.

Climbing Philosophy

Have a great time. Summits are an excuse to spend time in inhospitable, beautiful places that we would probably never expend the effort to visit otherwise. It's an excuse that gives me some of my best moments every year.

Favorite Climbing Destination

Red Rocks for climbing, both for easy access and fun days, and Alaska for beauty.

Favorite Style of Climbing

I love rock climbing because it is natural for me. It feels easy and is always enjoyable. I love alpine climbing for the amazing areas it puts you in. Ice climbing is cold, unnatural, and difficult, but I enjoy it in the "that was great, now lets get a beer" sort of way.

Hobbies and Interests

I am a photographer, blogger, and enjoy carpentry during the winter.

Inspirations

My dog Luna inspires me in her never-ending pursuit of tennis balls (If only I could replicate that drive!) My other dog, Portree, inspires me with her ability to be happy and wag her tail no matter how bad things are.

Rewarding Moment as AAI Guide

Some of the best moments I've had as a guide are times I've spent getting to know the participants after a day of climbing. My first climb working as a guide was in a total white out on Mt. Shucksan. After a full day of climbing in the fog we broke out of the clouds at 9,000 ft to the most perfect blue sky I have ever seen... Certainly one of my most memorable days as a guide.
