Patagonia - Gorra Blanca Expedition

Overview

Gorra Blanca (9,514 ft / 2900 m) sits on the border between Argentina and Chile and marks one of the gateways to the Southern Patagonian Ice Field. It is one of the most easily identifiable mountains on the periphery of the ice.

In Spanish, Gorra Blanca means "white hat," which gives the impression that the mountain starts with vertical walls and ends in a dome. And though a part of the mountain looks like a dome, the summit is a bit sharper. The bulk of the route requires moderate snow and ice climbing with angles ranging 30- to 40-degrees up to a scenic summit.

Though attempts on the mountain were made as early as the thirties, the first successful ascent of the peak took place in 1964. Since then the mountain has slowly gained popularity as it provides climbers with the opportunity for a shorter objective, while still accessing the iconic Southern Patagonian Ice Field.

Objectives

The primary objective of this program is an ascent of Gorra Blanca. During your climb you will also enjoy the amazing views that the Southern Patagonian Ice Field has to offer, and throughout this climb you will utitilize previous glacier travel and climbing techniques.

Weather

The wind in the area is sometimes referred to as "the broom of God." It is for this reason that we have devised a 5-day itinerary with one day built in to accomodate for weather or to add rest days. The weather conditions can be severe in this area, even in summer, so having extra time for weather or rest days can be essential.

It is important to note that part of the reason this area is so beautiful is because it is hit by high winds and storms regularly. Good naviagtion and glacier travel skills are necessary for an ascent of Gorra Blanca. The actual climb of Gorra Blanca by the main route is of moderate difficulty, however it requires proficiency with ice tools and solid knowledge of crevasse rescue skills. Currently, these programs are being offered on a private basis only. The program is available from September through March. Early bookings are encouraged.

Prerequisites:

Excellent physical condition

Previous experience camping in a wintery backcountry environment

Multi-day backpacking and/or mountaineering experience

Previous glacier travel experience
